“True Love is a Trunk Full of Ammunition.”
Hand in mine into your icy blues and then I say to you we can take to the highway.
Her icy blue eyes fluttered open. She cast them over to the mess of sheets beside her. His hazel eyes met her gaze. He smiled his traditional knee-weakening smile.
“Good Morning, Sera.”
“Morning, Tony. How did you sleep?” She rubbed her eyes and sat up, leaning against the headboard.
“Pretty good for being in a hotel in the middle of nowhere.” He leaned up and kissed her forehead. “How about you?”
She smiled. “Pretty good, despite the fact I showered in a hotel shower. I still feel dirty.”
“You are still pretty on the inside.” He laughed at her and pulled her into a deep kiss. “Ready to hit the road again, Mrs. Smith?”
She laughed at the use of their fake name. “Of course I am, Mr. Smith.”
With this trunk of ammunition too, I’d end my days with you in a hail of bullets.
Tony walked to the end of the bed and slipped on his faded jeans and picked up their suitcase. It was an old Army trunk marked “Ammunition” on the top and sides. Sera finished dressing and grabbed a small bag. It contained all their money, c.d's, and a gun with extra bullets. He kissed her cheek as she walked by him.
She turned to smile at him. “Come on Babe, We want to get to Monroeville by sunset.”
He laughed and got in the car after putting the Suitcase in the trunk. They drove into the sunrise. It was quiet for awhile. He drove while she watched the country side roll by her window. The faint sounds of My Chemical Romance’s “Demolition Lover’s” could be heard.
“Hey baby, it’s our song, Tony smiled and turned it up in time to start singing along. “I’m trying; I’m trying to let you know just how much you mean to me. And after all the things we put each other through.”
Sera smiled, kissed his cheek, and began singing. “And I would drive until the end with you, a liquor store or two keeps the gas tank full and I feel like there’s nothing left to do but prove myself to you and we’ll keep it running.”
Tony pulled over into a little gas station and ran inside. He grabbed a few things and came back to the car. He handed her a white and red rose. She tossed him a funny look.
“What’s this for Tony?”
He smiled slyly. “Because I love you.”
She smiled. “Really now? Do you really love me or are you trying to get in my pants?”
He laughed and kissed her. “Both.”
She returned the kiss. “I love you too Tony.”
He backed the car out of the gas station and hit the highway again. He shot her a casual glance and saw she was singing along with the radio, without her realizing it he turned the volume down to hear her angelic voice belt out the words to Fiona Apple’s “Criminal”
“I’ve been a bad, bad girl. I've been careless with a delicate man. And it’s a sad, sad world when a girl will break a boy just because she can. Don’t you tell me to deny it? I’ve done wrong and I want to suffer for my sins. I’ve come to you because I need guidance to be true and I don’t know where I can begin. TONY! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?”
He smiled. “I just like listening to you sing. I swear you sound like an angel.”
She laughed and pushed her blonde hair out of her face. “Anthony Francis Way, Sometimes I swear you lie to me.”
He laughed and shook his head causing his shaggy brown hair to fall in his face. “Aw Sera Beth Iero, you know I love you.”
She laughed. “I know, Tony.” Something caught her eye. “Baby, Look! Monroeville is only 5 miles away.”
He looked at the sign. “That it is, and look Pet, I see a female hitchhiker.”
She grinned evilly. “Number five?”
He nodded. “Number five.”
He eased the old car to a stop. “Excuse me, Miss, Where are you heading?”
The red head looked at him. “Monroeville. Give me a lift?”
Sera smiled and nudged Tony. “Sure, climb in.”
The read haired beauty climbed in. “Thank you. I have been walking for seven days.”
Tony looked at her. “Seven days? Wow, that’s a lot of walking. I’m Tony by the way. And this is Sera.”
Sera smiled. “And who might you be?”
The girl blinked. “I’m Emmy. It’s nice to meet you”
The couple smiled at her then at each other. They spoke in unison. “It’s our pleasure.”
The exit to Monroeville was in their line of vision. A road was coming up on their right. It was the Road to Emmy’s Hell. Tony turned the old car onto the dirt road.
“Well Emmy I hope you’re not in any big hurry. I have to make a quick stop.”
Sera stifled a giggle. “Yeah, we have to drop something off.”
The car eased down the backwoods country road. Emmy looked out the window. The area was beautiful. The lush flora made it seem surreal and calming to the tired girl. Something caught her eye. She squinted and saw what appeared to be a human hanging from a tree. He was missing his heart. She blinked and looked again. It was still there. Since it was close to Halloween, Emmy didn’t think anything of it and put it out of her mind. She looked forward. Sera was facing her with a .357 magnum in her face. The car was stopping. Emmy grabbed at the door handle, only to discover there wasn’t one. She tried to scream but the minute she opened her mouth the cold steel barrel was shoved in.
Sera glared at her. “Stay still or I’ll shoot.”
Emmy froze in fear. Tony climbed into the back and tied her ankles and wrists together. Sera pulled the gun out of her mouth. Emmy went to scream again but was silenced by duct tape over her mouth. Sera opened the door and Tony shoved Emmy out.
Tony stood and grabbed Sera. He pulled her into a deep kiss. “Honey, that was perfect. You never made a sound. I am so proud of you.”
Sera smiled and bit at his neck. “Do I win prize?”
He laughed and kicked Emmy. “After we are finished with her.”
Emmy’s green eyes went wide in terror, her mind raced. What was going to happen to her? Tony picked her up; much like a child would a doll. Sera walked in front of him and opened the door on the barn. They went in. There was a foul stench in the air. It smelled like rotting flesh. Sera giggled and flipped on a light. Tony set Emmy on the ground.
Emmy surveyed the room. There were three other bodies strewn about. Each missing their heart just like the man on the way in. Was this to be her fate? She shut her eyes in hope this was just a terrible nightmare. She felt a quick pull on her face. The duct tape was gone. She was too scared to speak. Her nightmare had become reality.
Tony was standing above her. “What no attempt to scream?” he laughed as Sera walked over to them.
Emmy shook her head. She had no voice. She was too terrified. Sera was still giggling. It was an evil, sinister giggle.
“What’s wrong, Pet? Cat got your tongue?”
Tony laughed. “Sera, Behave.” He smiled and grabbed Emmy by the shirt. “Welcome to Hell.”
Emmy was shaking violently. Sera was brandishing her sparkling silver pen knife. Tony looked to his lover. A sinister smile passed over his face.
“Tony, can I use this one as my practice dummy?” Sera batted her big blue eyes.
“Before or after we after he take her heart?” He questioned.
“Both. Baby, I need to work on my art. Her flesh is so prefect and flawless. Please?” Sera begged.
“Of course, Honey. Go ahead and start.”
“Thanks, Tony.” Sera sat on the girl’s stomach and cut open her shirt, revealing the creamy fair skin and the flat stomach Emmy had. With what seemed to be practiced precision, Sera started to carve delicate, intricate tribal patterns in the other’s skin. “Scream for me, Emmy.” She smiled at the girl, a hint of blood lust in her eyes. “Scream for me.”
Emmy felt the cold blade touch and carve her skin. She opened her mouth to scream. Nothing but a slight whimper came out. She hated this pain. She tried to scream again. This time she was silenced by a chloroform rag. Tony had shoved it into her open mouth. Emmy took her last look at the world around her. She had the feeling of pain in her chest. She was now a heartless corpse. Sera cackled as she held the still beating heart in her hand. Tony grabbed the heart and threw it against the wall with a splat. He picked Sera up and kissed her. Together they picked Emmy’s still warm corpse and threw her into a box. They went and wiped the blood from them with what was left with Emmy’s shirt.
They got into the car and drove into Monroeville. They got to their final location. The courthouse. Tony popped open the trunk and Sera moved next to him. They looked at the trunk. Sera took her knife and carved the fifth heart into it. Tony looked at her.
“Demolition Lover’s strike again”
Sera smiled. They kissed as snow started falling on the desert like city.
But this time,
We’ll show them.
We’ll show them all how much we mean
As snow falls
On desert sky,
Until the end of every…
Tony wiped a speck of blood from Sera’s face. She smiled and leaned her head against his neck. He smiled and linked their hands together. She tilted her head upward. Their eyes met and yet again, they kissed.
And as we’re falling down,
And in this Pool of blood,
And as we’re touching hands…
And AS we’re falling down,
I’ll see your eyes.
And in this pool of blood,
I’ll meet your eyes.
I mean this.
Forever.
